Layer Cake

Electric and eccentric, a striking aesthetic refresh of a previously tired fire stair at the heart of RMIT’s Building 56.

This modest upgrade shows that even the humble fire stair can be a space of surprise and playfulness. It takes RMIT’s red hue, anchors it to the entry floor, then dissolves it both up and down into a pink and a grey to provide to the visitor a subconscious register of their location in the building vertically. The project also included substantial modernisation and consolidation of building services, and the bringing into compliance of questionable existing conditions.
